227th Marine Corps Birthday
Since the Marine Corps Birthday (10 November 2002) fell on
Sunday this year--one day after our
regular meeting day of Saturday, the San Luis Rey Officers Club at MCB Camp
Pendleton, California, rescheduled our room to
accommodate Marine Corps Birthday events. The only date that the Officers Club
could host our meeting was 2 November. Unfortunately, a number of our
members had already committed to attend the 13th Annual Military Women’s
Luncheon at the Miramar Officers Club, MCAS Miramar, on that date. Consequently, our
November meeting was cancelled and each member celebrated the Marine Corps birthday
in her own way.
226th Marine Corps Birthday
In
2001, our chapter celebrated the Marine Corps birthday in style. To the left is a thumbnail showing one of the members of
the
Marine Corps Junior ROTC flag honor guard and Mike Sullivan, the director of the Junior ROTC program. They are holding our cake
celebrating the 226th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps.
The members of the flag escort came from both Oceanside High School and El
Camino High School in Oceanside, California.
For a closer view of our cake on its patriotic tablecloth,
please click on the thumbnail to the right. After the cake-cutting, the first
pieces of birthday cake were presented to our
oldest and youngest
members. Pictured to the left is our youngest member, Isela Talamantes, and our
oldest member, Alyce Williamson with their pieces of cake.
During
the meeting, we had a fire drill and our members (along with a few of their
husbands) posed for the photo to the right. The photo was taken outside of our
meeting place at the San Luis Rey Officers Club. Although the officers club is not
visible in this photo, the adjacent orange trees and tennis courts can be seen in the background.
