Who Was Edith Macias Vann?

Edith Macias Vann

Edith Macias Vann (“Macias” is pronounced “Muh-SEE-us”) enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War I. She was one of only 305 women to serve as “Marinettes.” When the chapter was organized in September 1972, Edith was living in Oceanside, California, and came to the forming meetings.

Her service to the country, patriotism, dedication to the goals of the Women Marines Association, and leadership abilities so impressed the founding members of the chapter that they felt they owed a debt of gratitude to this pioneering woman. Consequently, they unanimously voted to name the chapter after her.

The chapter has now grown into one of the largest and most active Women Marines Association chapters in the country. The September meeting in 2003 marked the 31st year that our chapter has been holding regular monthly meetings. As of February 27, 2004, our chapter had 113 members.

Our chapter has now resumed its original name: Edith Macias Vann Southern California Chapter. This was done so that other chapters would know that we are located in Southern California.

Bylaws, Photo Album and Awards

You can check out our bylaws, photo album and awards by going to the buttons at the top of this page. (The music which accompanies this page is “The Liberty Bell” by John Philip Sousa (1854–1932). The British show, Monty Python, liked it so much that it became their theme song.)
